In 1886, Scottish immigrant John Gillespie built a homestead in Sarasota, which included a long greenway with two holes – a golf course –continuing his passion for golf that he had fostered in Scotland. This was the origin of golf in Florida and possibly in the United States. Over time, Sarasota has built a number of premier golf communities on some of the greatest golf courses in Florida. In addition to the golf communities, Sarasota also attracted many well-known architects such architects as Paul Rudolph, Ralph Twitchell and many others whose work can be seen all over the area.
Once a small town, Sarasota grew over time into a thriving community due in part to its lush tropical landscape and natural beauty. As Sarasota became popular it began luring more people to the area with roots in the arts culture. Artists and writers alike made their way to Sarasota after John Ringling settled here, as he developed his grand estate, which later became The Ca’ d’Zan. Soon after, The Ringling School of Art and Design was built and the arts scene continued to flourish. Sarasota is now home to superb art galleries and local creative entrepreneurs creating a vibrant arts community. The performing arts are another huge attraction bringing people from all over the country to the Van Wezel, the Asolo Theatre, the Sarasota Ballet, and many other venues.
Sarasota is also known worldwide for its beautiful beaches – Siesta Key Beach has been continuously rated the number one beach in the U.S. which has led to a tremendous growth in tourism and a great boost to the local economy. Lido Key and Longboat Key also boast wonderful scenic beaches and each contain characteristics distinctive from the other. Whether you’re seeking peace and quiet, great shopping and dining, or fun on the water, each of the keys offer something unique.
